HSK levels explained: what HSK 3.0 changed and the word counts

A LinZi guide - the app is free on iOS, Android and the web.

The HSK (汉语水平考试) is mainland China's official proficiency standard and the vocabulary ladder almost every textbook and app is built around. The current standard, HSK 3.0, replaced the old six-level system in 2021 - and the numbers on most websites are still the old ones.

The two standards, briefly

Old HSK 2.0: six written levels, ~5,000 words total, topping out around upper-intermediate. New HSK 3.0: nine levels, ~11,000 words, three bands - elementary (1-3), intermediate (4-6) and advanced (7-9, one merged band). Level 6 of the old test maps roughly to level 5 of the new one; the new top band pushes into genuinely advanced territory - literature, news analysis, professional reading.

What each level means

LevelWordsWhat it feels like
HSK 1500survival phrases, pinyin-heavy reading
HSK 21,272simple daily exchanges, graded texts L1
HSK 32,245errands, travel, short messages
HSK 43,245real conversations, slow native content
HSK 54,316news with effort, most fiction reachable
HSK 65,456fluent daily life, films with subs
HSK 7-911,092academic and professional Mandarin

Counts are cumulative syllabi, and every level has its full list here: HSK vocabulary lists - each entry links a dictionary page with pinyin, zhuyin and audio, like 发展. If you are not sure where you sit, the adaptive level test places you in about three minutes.

How many words do you actually need?

The honest heuristic: ~3,000 words covers casual conversation and graded reading; ~5,000-6,000 covers most news and fiction with a dictionary for the stragglers; the 7-9 band is for people whose work or degree depends on it. Coverage beats raw count anyway - a well-ordered 3,000 outperforms a random 6,000, which is why the syllabus exists.

Common questions

Is HSK 6 fluent?

Old-standard HSK 6 is roughly C1 - comfortable fluency for daily life and most media, not academic mastery. The new 7-9 band extends well beyond it.

Is HSK 3.0 in effect yet?

The 3.0 syllabus is the published standard since 2021; exam rollout has been gradual, but the word lists - which is what learners actually use - are what apps and publishers already teach.

How long does each HSK level take?

Very roughly: level 1 in months, each further level about doubling the study hours. Consistent daily spaced review beats weekend cramming by a wide margin.
