Terms of Use

These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your use of the LinZi mobile and web applications and the linzi.app website (the "Service"). By downloading, installing or using the Service you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. The Service

LinZi is a Mandarin-learning application providing spaced-repetition flashcards, graded reading, stroke-order practice, listening drills and reference dictionaries for both Simplified and Traditional Chinese tracks.

2. License

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Service for your own language learning. You may not copy, redistribute, resell or make the app's content, including stories, audio, stroke vectors and datasets, available outside the Service, except where the underlying source material is public domain or separately licensed.

3. Subscriptions and purchases

  • Plans. LinZi Pro is offered as a monthly subscription (from $6.99/month), an annual subscription (from $39.99/year) or a one-time lifetime purchase (from $79.99). A free tier is available without a subscription.
  • Billing. On the website, payment is processed by Stripe at the listed web prices. Inside the app, payment is charged to your Apple ID or Google account at the store's listed price, which is higher than the web price because it includes the app-store fee. Prices are shown in your local currency at checkout.
  • Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled before the end of the current period, at least 24 hours prior for app-store subscriptions.
  • Free trials. Where a trial is offered, it converts to a paid subscription unless cancelled before the trial ends.
  • Managing subscriptions. Web purchases: manage or cancel from the link in your Stripe receipt email (or contact us). App-store purchases: cancel in your Apple ID / Google account settings. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Restoring purchases is available from the Pro screen.
  • Refunds. Web purchases: contact us, refunds follow our posted policy. App-store purchases: refund requests are governed by the applicable store's refund policy (Apple App Store or Google Play).

4. Institutional licenses (schools)

  • Seats. Institutional licenses are sold per seat for a fixed term (usually one academic year), priced under a quote agreed by email and paid through a Stripe payment link or invoice.
  • Join codes. Each class receives a join code that activates LinZi Pro for up to the purchased seat count until the term ends. A student who redeems the code occupies a seat for the whole term. The institution is responsible for distributing the code only to its enrolled students.
  • Teacher content. Teachers may publish decks, stories and audio to their class via the teacher portal. The institution is responsible for the legality and appropriateness of material its teachers publish.
  • Renewals. Renewal extends the same join code and seat allocation for the next term.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Extract, scrape or bulk-download the app's datasets, audio or story corpus;
  • Attempt to bypass licensing, entitlements or seat limits;
  • Share class join codes beyond the institution they were issued to;
  • Upload teacher content that infringes others' rights, is unlawful, or is inappropriate for students;
  • Interfere with or probe the Service's infrastructure.

Violation of this section may result in suspension or termination of access without refund.

6. Educational disclaimer

LinZi is a study aid. We make no representation that using the Service will produce any particular score on HSK, TOCFL or other examinations, and no guarantee of specific learning outcomes.

7. Intellectual property

The Service's design, code, generated audio, curated story corpus and brand are the property of LinZi. Third-party datasets used in the Service (HSK/TOCFL syllabi, CC-CEDICT, Make Me a Hanzi, Tatoeba) remain under their respective open licenses - see Licenses & credits for the full attribution list.

8. Disclaimers and limitation of liability

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our aggregate liability arising from or related to the Service shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim.

9. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or terminate access for breach of these Terms. Provisions that by their nature should survive (including IP, disclaimers, and limitation of liability) survive termination.

10. Changes

We may update these Terms from time to time. The current version is always at linzi.app/terms; continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
