Tones are Mandarin's famous hurdle, and most explanations make them harder than they are: four pitch patterns plus a light neutral tone, learnable in a month if you drill them the way they actually occur - in pairs, inside words.
The four tones (and the fifth)
Using the classic demo 妈麻马骂吗 (mā má mǎ mà ma):
- 1st tone ā - high and level, like singing a note: 妈 mā "mother".
- 2nd tone á - rising, like a surprised "what?": 麻 má "hemp".
- 3rd tone ǎ - the catch: in real speech it is a low flat tone, not the dipping V textbooks draw. The V only surfaces in isolation or at a pause: 马 mǎ "horse".
- 4th tone à - sharp falling, like an order: 骂 mà "scold".
- Neutral ·a - light and short, borrowing pitch from the syllable before it: 吗 ·ma (question particle), or the second syllable of 妈妈 mā·ma.
Tone pairs are the real unit
Mandarin is mostly two-syllable words, and tones behave differently in combination: a 3rd tone before another 3rd tone becomes a 2nd tone (你好 nǐhǎo is pronounced níhǎo), and before anything else it stays a low tone. Practicing single syllables trains a sound that rarely occurs; practicing pairs trains what you will actually say. That is why the sounds chart and the app's tone games drill pairs and minimal contrasts (zh/z, an/ang, tone 2 vs 3) rather than isolated syllables.
How to actually build them
- Hear before you say. Minimal-pair drills (buy 买 mǎi vs sell 卖 mài) train the ear; you cannot produce a contrast you cannot hear.
- Shadow native audio. Repeat a syllable right after the model and match the pitch contour - on-device tools like Tone Echo score your contour against the model so feedback does not depend on your own ear.
- Learn words with their tones, always. A word learned as "xuexi" is learned wrong twice - the dictionary shows tones on every entry (e.g. 学习, xuéxí) precisely because bare syllables are not words.
Common questions
How many tones does Mandarin have?
Four citation tones plus a neutral fifth tone. Cantonese has six+; Taiwanese Hokkien has seven - do not let the counts scare you, Mandarin's system is small.
What is the hardest tone?
The third tone - not because the shape is hard but because the textbook "dip" is wrong in running speech. Learn it as a low flat tone and it becomes the easiest.
How important is tone sandhi?
Two rules cover almost everything: 3rd+3rd → 2nd+3rd, and 不/一 changing tone before a 4th tone (bùyào → búyào). Your ear picks up the rest from input.
