Skill vs ability vs permission

The pattern

会 + skill · 能 + ability · 可以 + permission
  • 会 = a learned skill: 我会游泳 'I can swim (learned it)'. 能 = physical ability/circumstance allows: 今天能来 'can come today'. 可以 = permission or 'acceptable': 这里可以抽烟吗? 'may I smoke here?'.
  • For future ability 会 is normal: 明天我会来 'I'll come tomorrow', but there it means 'will'.

Examples

我会说一点儿汉语。 我會說一點兒漢語
wǒ huì shuō yī diǎn r hàn yǔ
I can speak a little Chinese.
他病了，今天不能来。 他病了今天不能來
tā bìng liǎo jīn tiān bù néng lái
He's ill, can't come today.
这儿可以停车。 這兒可以停車
zhè r kě yǐ tíng chē
You can park here.
