Chinese likes saying 'because … therefore …' out loud

The pattern

因为 + reason, 所以 + result
  • 因为 introduces the reason, 所以 the result. Unlike English you can, and often should, use both in one sentence: 因为下雨，所以我不去了.
  • Either half can stand alone: 因为下雨，我没去 / 下雨了，所以我没去.

Examples

因为下雨，所以比赛取消了。 因為下雨所以比賽取消了
yīn wèi xià yǔ suǒ yǐ bǐ sài qǔ xiāo liǎo
Because it rained, the match was cancelled.
因为他病了，所以没来上课。 因為他病了所以沒來上課
yīn wèi tā bìng liǎo suǒ yǐ méi lái shàng kè
Because he was ill, he didn't come to class.
太贵了，所以我不买。 太貴了所以我不買
tài guì liǎo suǒ yǐ wǒ bù mǎi
It's too expensive, so I won't buy it.
