过年guò nián时shí家jiā家jiā贴tiē「福fú」字zì。很hěn多duō人家rén jia把bǎ「福fú」字zì倒dǎo过来guò lái贴tiē。

At New Year every home puts up the character fu, fortune - and many hang it upside down.

「倒dǎo」和hé「到dào」读音dú yīn一样yí yàng。「福fú倒dǎo了le」听起来tīng qi lai就是jiù shì「福fú到dào了le」。

Dao (upside down) sounds like dao (to arrive). 'The fu is upside down' sounds like 'fortune has arrived.'

传说chuán shuō有yǒu一家人yì jiā rén不bú认识rèn shi字zì，把bǎ福fú字zì贴tiē倒dǎo了le。主人zhǔ rén本běn想xiǎng生气shēng qì，有人yǒu rén说shuō：这zhè是shì福fú到dào了le呀ya！大家dà jiā都dōu笑xiào了le。

Legend says a family once pasted it upside down by mistake. The master was about to get angry when someone said: fortune has arrived! Everyone laughed.

从此cóng cǐ倒dǎo贴tiē福fú字zì成chéng了le习惯xí guàn。红hóng纸zhǐ黑hēi字zì，倒dǎo着zhe也好yě hǎo看kàn。

The habit stayed. Black ink on red paper looks good upside down too.
