A radical (部首) is the indexing component of a character - the piece a dictionary files it under. Of the ~214 classical radicals, maybe sixty do real work in modern characters; learn those and most characters decode themselves.
How characters use radicals
Most characters are meaning+sound hybrids: a radical supplies the category, a phonetic supplies the pronunciation. 清/情/晴/请/睛 all carry 青 (qīng) for sound, with a radical telling you which qīng: 氵 water, 忄 heart, 日 sun, 讠 speech, 目 eye. The pattern is productive enough that literate readers guess both meaning and reading of new characters - and wrong often enough that the guess needs checking.
The radicals that do the most work
| Radical | Meaning field | Example family |
|---|---|---|

Position tells you the job
The same element changes job by position: 火 on the left (烧, cook) is a radical; on the bottom as 灬 (煮, 热, 熟) it means heat/fire again; as a standalone it is the word fire. Learning the ~20 positional disguises (忄=心, 氵=水, 辶=movement) removes most "invisible radical" confusion.
What radicals cannot do
The meaning hint is real but fuzzy - 狼 (wolf) sits under 犬 dog. Use the radical to organize memory and file characters, not to argue precise meaning; the word, not the radical, decides.
Common questions
How many Chinese radicals are there?
The classical Kangxi system has 214; modern dictionaries use variant counts (~200). For learning, the top 60-70 cover the vast majority of common characters.
Do I need to memorize all radicals?
No - learn the frequent ones as they appear inside real characters. A radical learned through 10 words it heads sticks; a radical memorized from a chart fades.
Is a radical the same as a character?
Sometimes - 女, 木, 心 are standalone characters too. Positioned forms like 氵, 忄, 讠 are components only. Every radical is a component; not every component is a radical.
