礼记·大道之行也

大道dà dào之zhī行háng也yě，天下tiān xià为wéi公gōng。选xuǎn贤xián与yǔ能néng，讲jiǎng信xìn修xiū睦mù。

When the great Way was practised, the world was a commons, the worthy and able were chosen, trust was kept, harmony built.

故gù人rén不bù独dú亲qīn其qí亲qīn，不bù独dú子zǐ其qí子zǐ，使shǐ老lǎo有所yǒu suǒ终zhōng，壮zhuàng有所yǒu suǒ用yòng，幼yòu有所yǒu suǒ长cháng，鳏guān寡guǎ孤独gū dú废fèi疾jí者zhě皆jiē有所yǒu suǒ养yǎng。

People honoured not only their own parents nor loved only their own children, the aged had their end, the strong their work, the young their growth; widows, widowers, orphans and the disabled were all cared for.

男nán有yǒu分fēn，女nǚ有yǒu归guī。货huò恶è其qí弃qì于yú地dì也yě，不必bù bì藏cáng于yú己jǐ；力lì恶è其qí不bù出于chū yú身shēn也yě，不必bù bì为wéi己jǐ。

Men had roles, women had homes; goods hated waste but weren't hoarded; effort hated idleness but wasn't selfish.

是shì谓wèi大dà同tóng。

This is called the Great Community.

大道dà dào行háng的de时候shí hou，天下tiān xià是shì公gōng家jiā的de——不bù只是zhǐ shì亲自qīn zì己jǐ的de亲qīn、子zǐ自己zì jǐ的de子zǐ；老人lǎo rén有yǒu归宿guī sù，壮zhuàng年nián有用yǒu yòng处chù，孩子hái zi有yǒu成长chéng zhǎng，鳏guān寡guǎ孤独gū dú残疾cán jí都dōu有人yǒu rén养yǎng；东西dōng xi不bù浪费làng fèi但dàn也yě不bù私sī藏cáng，力气lì qi不bù吝lìn惜xī但dàn不bù为wéi自己zì jǐ——这zhè叫jiào大dà同tóng。
