How to learn Chinese: the method that actually works

A LinZi guide - the app is free on iOS, Android and the web.

"Learn Chinese" fails as a goal because it bundles five different skills: sounds, characters, vocabulary, listening and output. Each has its own machinery, and the people who stall are almost always strong in one and starving another. Here is the working stack.

1. Sounds before everything

Pinyin plus the four tones is the map for everything spoken. Two focused weeks on the initials, finals and tone pairs pays back for years - every word you learn later arrives already pronounceable. The tone guide has the full set of traps English speakers fall into.

2. Characters by component, not by stroke count

Nobody memorizes 3,000 pictures. Characters are built from ~200 radicals and a few hundred reusable components that carry sound or meaning: 请/清/情/晴 all share 青's sound. Learn the pieces and new characters assemble themselves - see the character memory method.

3. Vocabulary in syllabus order, on a schedule

The HSK lists are ordered so the most frequent words come first - free value you should not reorder. What matters is the review engine: an FSRS-based deck (LinZi, or Anki if you prefer DIY) that schedules each card the day before you would forget it. Twenty minutes daily beats a weekend binge, always.

4. Reading and listening at your level

Input only works when you understand ~95% of it. Graded material - the story library is level-tagged from L1 upward - keeps you in that zone. For listening, shadow short audio: play a sentence, pause, repeat aloud, then read the text to check.

5. Output last, but not never

Speaking consolidates what input built. When you can handle HSK 2-3 material, language exchange (HelloTalk, Tandem) or a cheap tutor on italki turns passive vocabulary active. Do not wait for fluency to start - but do not pay for conversation before you have something to say.

Common questions

Where should a total beginner start with Chinese?

Two weeks of pinyin and tones, then a syllabus-ordered vocabulary deck plus a level-1 graded reader. Characters can begin in parallel once sounds are in place.

Do I need to learn characters or is pinyin enough?

Pinyin gets you speaking, but nothing written by natives is in pinyin - menus, messages, subtitles all need characters. Learn them by component and the cost drops dramatically.

Is Chinese better learned in a classroom or self-study?

The skills that bottleneck learners - vocabulary, characters, listening - are all solo-friendly. A tutor earns its cost for speaking feedback and error correction, not for delivering content.
