宋sòng朝cháo的de皇帝huáng dì要求yāo qíu大臣dà chén们men多duō读书dú shū。

A Song-dynasty emperor urged his ministers to read more.

有yǒu大臣dà chén说shuō：书shū太tài多duō了liǎo，读dú不过bù guò来lái。

One said: 'There are too many books, one cannot read them all.'

皇帝huáng dì说shuō：开kāi卷juàn有益yǒu yì，只要zhǐ yào打开dǎ kāi书shū读dú，总是zǒng shì有yǒu好处hǎo chu的de。

The emperor said: 'Opening a book is always worthwhile, read, and you always gain.'

后来hòu lái，人们rén men用yòng开kāi卷juàn有益yǒu yì来lái形容xíng róng读书dú shū总zǒng有yǒu好处hǎo chu。

Since then, 'to open a book is to profit' describes the benefit of reading.
